Unfortunately, one of the features you don’t get to experience until after many hours of progression is halfway-realistic damage modeling. But I found myself, somewhat inexplicably, going back to my trusty Corolla. And so, eschewing late-model fare, I began my road odyssey with my ’83 Corolla (bought with only 2,845 miles on it!).Īs you play through the game’s career mode, you unlock more capable vehicles (though, being a good Woodstock boy, I really did enjoy the 1962 Volkswagen minibus), as well as new tracks and additional game features. Most are modern, but there is always the used-car dealer. Instead the new-car dealers in the game will be offering you a selection of Japanese compacts.

You should know going in that when you begin GT5’s main career mode, you won’t be driving McLarens and Bugattis. Grip, torque and steering characteristics are vitally important. The weight distribution of a midengine versus front-engine vehicle is clear as you brake going into a turn. The difference in handling between a front-wheel- and rear-wheel-drive car is apparent. What I can tell you is that the overall experience feels coherent and natural enough to fool me into thinking it’s real. So I can’t tell you just how similar driving a high-powered Ferrari or Pagani Zonda or Nascar racer in GT5 is to the real thing, because I’ve never driven the real thing.

I’m a big fan of the TV show “Top Gear” (the original British version, not the somewhat embarrassing American remake, thank you very much), and I genuinely like cars. But I have long loved racing games, going back to my domination of the arcade classic Pole Position in the early 1980s.

Now, full disclosure: as I pointed out this summer in a review of Sony’s very different, intentionally goofy kart racing game, ModNation Racers, I don’t drive in real life. Most people have never even seen 3-D television, and almost no one owns a 3-D-capable set right now.īut Gran Turismo 5 ought to sell a bunch of them, because the sense of depth perception and spatial awareness that 3-D provides is a revelation in Gran Turismo 5 and propels the experience to an entirely new level of immersion and realism. But when it comes down to just driving one of more than 1,000 cars from around the world around any of dozens of fastidiously rendered real-world tracks, from Daytona to the Nürburgring in Germany, Gran Turismo 5 delivers an incomparably visceral virtual driving experience.Įven more important, Gran Turismo 5 is the first game that really makes the case and starts the drumbeat for 3-D gaming. In some ways the game suffers from some plainly inept design decisions. In fairness, Gran Turismo 5 is not always at its best.

And yet at its best, Gran Turismo 5, Sony’s breath-snatching and definitive new racing simulator, is even better than special. Anything that can make me passionate about a 1983 Toyota Corolla has to be special.
